What Is National Lazy Day?
National Lazy Day is the one day out of the year where you don’t have to feel guilty for sleeping in or lounging in bed all day, you don’t need to feel remorse for slacking on your errands and chores, and you shouldn’t feel bad for taking the day to yourself. It’s a day where you can just exist and not have to accomplish tasks or stick to a schedule. And it seems as if the creators of this holiday were really embracing laziness, because there is no record of who it was that created it. But, whoever it was, we are thankful for them and their dedication to being lazy and carefree.
When Is National Lazy Day?
So, when is International Lazy Day? Well, National and World Lazy Day fall on the same day, which is August 10th. This year, it falls on a Tuesday. And unless your work already observes the holiday, we suggest you request a mental health day off so that you can celebrate the holiday properly. Of course, there are probably some commitments you may not be able to get out of, but it’s highly encouraged to try and take a break from the ones that you can. So, request the day off work, order those beautiful just-because flowers to be delivered to your home, and prepare to bask in the glory that is National Lazy Day.
5 Ways to Celebrate National Lazy Day
You may think that it’s counterproductive to plan your lazy day out, but going from being busy and having an intricately scheduled life, day in and day out, to a day to do nothing is a big adjustment. It is a good idea to give yourself a solid foundation for your lazy day, that way you aren’t tempted to do too much. Plus, then you don’t have to think about it during the day.
We have a few ideas to help you be as lazy as possible come August 10th:
Sleep in: If you only do one thing on National Lazy Day, it should be sleeping in. Kick off your lazy day properly, by staying in bed as long as possible and really soaking in the fact that you have nothing else to do.
Put your devices away: When we have our devices out, we might be too tempted to check emails, take a work call here or there, or work on an assignment. DON’T DO IT! Let yourself fully unplug and take a break from your phone. You’ll be so glad you did.
Scroll as long as you want: We know we told you to put your devices away, but if you are the type of person who never gets to scroll social media or play a mobile game, today might be your day to do it. But, only use your phone if you feel like you are strong enough to stay away from work-related tasks and duties. If you can’t, stick with keeping your phone put away.
Lounge: One of the best things about having a lazy day is the fact that you can remain horizontal for most of it. Lounge around, lay on the couch or stay in bed, take a nap in your hammock outside, or find a comfy spot on the floor with some pillows. No need to walk around too much or sit in a rigid chair. Be as lazy and as comfy as possible.
Order in: When it comes to having a lazy day, you don’t want to be cooking for yourself or doing the dishes and cleaning up the kitchen, so order in for every single meal. With restaurants’ ability to deliver food now, it has never been easier to be lazy with your food choices. You can even order delicious cookie baskets or dessert towers to ensure you have sweet treats to nibble on all throughout your lazy day.
At the end of the day, you know yourself best. You know your enneagram and how it contributes to your habits, how your habits influence your decisions, and ultimately what makes you, you. So, go with your gut and spend National Lazy Day the way that will benefit you most.

Though being lazy is normally seen as a bad thing, having a solid lazy day every once in a while can actually be beneficial for your mind, body, and soul.
