What to Write in a Condolence Note

It's hard to know what to say when someone has lost a loved one. Most of us struggle when it comes to writing a birthday card, let alone writing a note of sympathy when a friend has lost a loved one.

Getting started may be the hardest part - it is common to worry about how to gracefully offer sympathy or to tactfully write a condolence note. Many times, your grieving friend may just need a personal note, a hug, or a bouquet of flowers - just to let them know you care.

When you write a note, it's best to avoid the standard clichés "He is in a better place" or "I know how you feel". If your relationship with the deceased was close, you might add a short personal story or simply let your grieving friend know you will keep them in your thoughts and prayers. You will want to keep the note short and in your own words - often, it is the personal notes that can mean so much to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

If you're having trouble getting started, here are some ideas that may help you create your own sympathy note.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

With deepest sympathies.

So sorry for your loss.

Our deepest sympathies. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of you during this time.

May those we've lost, live on in our hearts.

Sending you sympathy, prayers, and love during this difficult time.

Our deepest condolences. May these flowers serve as a reminder of our support during your time of need.

As you grieve, please know we are always here for you.

We hope these flowers express what words can't say. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our loving thoughts embrace you during your time of grieving.

Our hearts are filled with sadness, but our memories will forever be joyous.

Words cannot express our sadness during this time. May these flowers, in some small way, offer an expression of our sympathy.

We are here for you, and we mourn with you during this difficult time.

Sending you wishes of peace and comfort and the courage to face this difficult time.

Please know how much this loss is felt by us all, and how deeply you are loved.

May love, hope and peace be with you today and always.
