TUSSIE MUSSIE BOUQUETS AND THE MEANING OF FLOWERS
Grounded in the long-standing tradition of floral symbolism, giving tussie mussie bouquets was popularized by Queen Victoria in England as a way for one to convey specific (and sometimes secret) messages without saying a word. In the 19th century, it became a popular trend for lovers or friends to express their feelings through the language of flowers, and each tussie mussie bouquet was as unique as a poem in its expressive mix of colorful blooms. It was common for young ladies of the era to own a dictionary of flower symbolism, which they used to decipher the sender’s intentions. This entertaining and beautiful custom is now reborn with Smithsonian Tussie Mussie Bouquets. Below is an overview of these carefully chosen bouquets.

  • SMITHSONIAN BOUQUET HOLDERS
The Smithsonian Institution boasts an exceptional collection of vintage bouquet holders, with nearly 250 bouquet holders in its Frances Jones Poetker Collection. These small, cone-shaped holders, designed specifically for hand-tied bouquets like tussie mussies, were fabricated from many different materials including gold, silver, enamel and mother of pearl. These bouquet holders were both decorative and functional, and were often commissioned from a jeweler. Most holders included a ring that was attached with a delicate chain so that a lady could dangle the holder from her finger if she needed both hands free. Some were even fitted with a concealed stand that could be released by a spring, thereby allowing the bouquet holder to rest on a table.
